Live the Haynes and Boone Experience

Most Haynes and Boone associates are recruited through our summer associate program. Because the summer experience is an important preview of your future and it’s important to us, too - we make it a realistic one. Our summer associates spend at least six weeks with us, working with our lawyers and living our culture.

Recent summers associates appreciate their experiences with us. Haynes and Boone is the only Texas-based firm ranked among the top 75 summer associate programs in the country in The American Lawyer's 2009 Summer Associate Survey, coming in at No. 65 out of 124 ranked firms. In the 2009 survey, office-specific programs ranked No. 5 in Dallas and No. 2 in Houston.

Where We Recruit

We recruit nationally. Today more than 40% of our lawyers are graduates of law schools located outside the state of Texas, and the members of our firm have graduated from nearly 150 colleges, universities and law schools.

Effective recruiting is the foundation of our diversity. We established the Haynes and Boone Minority Scholars Program for first year students at SMU Dedman School of Law and the University of Texas School of Law. Haynes and Boone scholars receive a monthly stipend, a summer clerkship at our firm, and a mentor to provide guidance during the student’s first year in law school.

Since 2003, we have also participated in a program sponsored by the Houston Bar Association to provide a summer clerkship in our Houston office to a first year minority law student from one of the three area law schools in Houston.

The People We Choose

We’re obviously looking for the best candidates, but you should be aware of certain guidelines that help us shape our final selection decisions.

  • We consider 1L candidates on a case by case basis, other than the Haynes and Boone Minority Scholars, who can join our summer program as 1Ls.
  • Our summer associates are typically required to spend at least six weeks working with our firm unless it is a special circumstance which has been approved by the hiring partner. Returning 1Ls and summer associates who need to resume school early because of law review obligations are allowed to come for five weeks.
  • Generally summer associates come during the first half of the summer. In certain offices, we allow the second half, with approval of the hiring partner and section head. If you plan to spend part of the summer working with another firm, we normally require you to spend the first half of the summer with us.
